چکیده

The maximum acceptable weights of lift (MAWL) of obese and non-obese participants were empirically investigated. Three obesity levels were considered: nonobese (18.5 kg/m body mass index (BMI) 24.9 kg/m), moderately obese (35 kg/m BMI 39.9 kg/m) and extremely obese (BMI 40 kg/m). Ten male and 10 female participants were recruited for each obesity level. The participants determined their MAWL for 18 different lifting task conditions (six lifting frequencies×three lifting heights). An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the effects of obesity level, gender, lifting height, lifting frequency and their interactions on MAWL. Overall, the ANOVA results indicated that obesity does not reduce MAWL, and thus, suggested that the existing MAWL data can be used to accommodate both general and obese workers. However, further studies based on the biomechanical and physiological approaches are required to provide more complete understanding of obesity effects on lifting tolerance limits.

The psychophysical relationship between the magnitude of pressure on thirteen test locations of twenty healthy subjects' feet with four probe areas at three indentation speeds and the corresponding perceived sensations were analyzed. The dependency of pressure pain thresholds (PPT) on area, A, and speed, v, can be mathematically modeled in the form, PPTi = [ai + bLn(v)]Aβi = 1,2...13 where β an...

Adaptive support has the potential to keep the operator optimally motivated, involved, and able to perform a task. In order to use such support, the operator's state has to be determined from physiological parameters and task performance measures. In an environment where the task of an ambulance dispatcher was simulated, two studies have been carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using car...

This study evaluated single-handed isometric push strength capabilities of females working at or above-shoulder level. We examined the influence of force exertion direction (vertical, horizontal and lateral), angle of shoulder flexion from horizontal (0°, 30°, 60° and 90°) and gross body posture (standing and sitting), on maximal volitional shoulder strength. Force exertion direction had the gr...

The 1960s represents a key decade in the expansion of ergonomics within the UK. This paper reviews trends and developments that emerged out of the 1960s and compares these with ergonomics research and practice today. The focus in particular is on the expansion of ergonomics as a discipline within industry, as well as more specific topics, such as the emergence of areas of interest, for example,...

The prevalence of job stress, distributions of major job stressors, and associations between perceived job stress levels and multiple physical discomforts are assessed via a cross-sectional study of 1023 male and female operators at telecommunication call centers in Taiwan. Cases of discomfort are identified via questionnaire surveys requiring respondents to self-reported symptoms of discomfort...
